Happiness is…

… overcoming fear to say what must be said.

…experiencing forgiveness, unexpectedly, like ocean spray falling on sun-blistered skin.

I write this as I listen to testimonies about the use of isolation in the U.S. criminal justice system, what some have begun to call “no touch torture.”  Across the country, prisoners are organizing nonviolently (primarily through hunger strikes) against the total sensory deprivation  they have been forced to endure for years and sometimes decades at a time.                                                (See: http://afsc.org/video/stopmax-video)

Happiness is…

…reaching out and meeting love’s embrace.
